Walking into her salle, Headmistress Cera Dragoneska began to smile. She felt most comfortable in the salle. Besides, she could beat the students and call it training. It was a great way to relieve stress. She hadn't known what she was getting into when she began the school.
Before the students arrived, she went through a series of complex stretches and practice moves. She did this whenever possible since it helped keep her fit and able to teach. Just as she finished, the students began to arrive. The bell rang and there were a few stragglers who stumbled in, hoping she wouldn't notice. Since it was the first class of the year, she would let it slide.
As always, she began the class with her customary speech. "Good morning, class! You are here to learn to fight, not to play around with weapons. While in this class, all weapons are to be treated with utmost care and respect. If I see you mistreating anything or doing anything that could potentially harm another, you will be in for punishment like you cannot imagine. Do not push me on this. you will not win." She looked around, meeting everyone's eyes with her own icy glare. It was better to strike fear into their hearts now rather than later.
"If you are late," Cera continued, "you will do three laps for every second after the bell. Then you will get into the practice ring with me. No excuses will be tolerated beyond a note from another teacher. Yet if you are late more than two consecutive days, even with the teacher's note, you will be doing much, much more. I will even ask the teacher if they wrote the note. Don't be late. Do not ask teachers for notes simply because you are too lazy to make it on time; they will not write it, and they will tell me. This is your only warning. Those of you who were late today will be excused.
"Now, while here, you will learn how to use a multitude of weapons, including the sword, the bow, the staff, and many others. Today, we will work with swords. I want all of you to take one and form two lines, facing each other. Eventually, you will make your own, but I want to start with basic stuff today. Move it!"
The students scramble to do as they were told and Cera smiles inwardly at their haste not to displease her. She finds it amusing that they are all so scared of her. When they were all ready, she went about teaching them the proper stance and footwork. Soon, she called a halt to that exercise and called for volunteers to work first with her. "Come on," she said when no one volunteered. "You all must do this today; I won't let you leave until you do. It is easier for me to help you when I see where you are." She stands there and waits for her first victi-...volunteer.
